Terms of service
Short, and written to be read. This is a draft pending review by counsel; it describes the deal we actually intend, and the wording will tighten before launch.

The service
What we provide, and what we do not promise
Assay Layer runs provenance checks on text and returns a report. The report combines watermark detection, file metadata inspection and statistical classification, and it states which of those layers were able to answer.
What we do not promise, ever: that a report identifies the author of a text, that a high score proves a text was machine-generated, or that a low score proves it was not. Detection is probabilistic and its errors are documented on our accuracy page. You agree not to present a report as proof of authorship, and not to use it as the sole basis of a decision that materially affects a person — an academic penalty, a dismissal, a refused payment. We build the product to make that misuse harder, but the obligation is yours.
The service is provided as it is, without a warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. Availability targets and any credits for missed targets, where they apply, are set out in a separate agreement for plan and compliance customers.
Your side
Acceptable use
You may submit text you have the right to submit. You may not use the service to build a competing detection dataset by bulk-submitting third-party content, to circumvent the free tier through automation, or to attack the infrastructure. API keys are yours to protect; requests made with your key are treated as yours.
We may suspend an account for abuse, non-payment, or where continued service would put us in breach of the law, and we will say why.
Money
Credits, payment and cancellation
Credits are consumed per assay according to the published rates. Packs are paid once. Plans bill monthly in advance and can be cancelled at any time, effective at the end of the paid period; we do not pro-rate a partial month. Failed requests are not charged for. Prices are in euro and exclude any VAT that applies to you.
Liability and law
The boring part
Our aggregate liability is limited to the amounts you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death, personal injury, or fraud. These terms are governed by French law and the courts of Paris have jurisdiction, without prejudice to consumer rights you may have where you live.
We will give notice of material changes by email to account holders, and the date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
